Welcome to Year 4

A quick introduction to our year

This year, Mr Sheridan will be leading Year 4 and will be joined by fellow teachers Miss Pope and Miss Swainston. We are also lucky enough to have Mrs Crampton who will be supporting groups of children in the mornings. The Year 4 team come with a wealth of experience and are all committed to delivering a brilliant year for your child.

If you have any concerns throughout the year, it would be best to discuss this with your class teacher after school or you can message them via Class Dojo. Alternatively, you can call the reception to book a meeting with your child’s class teacher.

Below you will find some of the exciting things that we have planned for the upcoming year. Please be aware this may be changed and updated throughout the year.

Our curriculum

At Sir Donald Bailey, we are always looking to improve our curriculum to ensure that children are getting the very best education possible. This is no different in Year 4 where we will be reviewing and improving our curriculum from previous years. We try and ensure that there are curriculum links where possible so that our children become immersed in a topic.

We cover brilliant history topics such as The Romans and The Ancient Greeks and Science topics such as The Water Cycle and Sound. All our topics are covered within our Composition lessons and the children have opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge through pieces of writing.

Every other week, we will complete an independent write where the children will be given a small input about something that has been covered in topic and then they will have to write about it in as much detail as possible. The children will be given extensive feedback the following week which will improve their writing greatly.

Spellings & TT rock stars

Spellings for your child will be stuck in diaries every Tuesday and they will be tested the following Tuesday. Please ensure your child practices these spellings to the best of their capabilities.

A TT Rock Stars login will be stuck in your child’s diary and this will give your child the opportunity to login from home and practice their timetables. Please use the following link to logon to your child’s account.

Swimming & PE

From the second week back, Year 4 will start swimming lessons on Monday mornings. Girls will need a swimming costume NOT a bikini and boys need close fitting trunks NOT Bermuda style shorts. The leisure centre are very strict about these rules and children will not be allowed to swim without the correct style of kit. Please ensure you provide your child with a towel and goggles are optional.

PE is on Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child comes in with the correct PE uniform which is a plain white t-shirt, shorts and plimsolls or trainers.

Year 4 Water Aid Day

During Autumn term, the children will be taking part in Water Aid’s School Challenge. The children will learn about Water Aid’s vision and take part in some challenges. Additionally, the children will raise some money by completing various activities throughout the day. The day will link to our Science work about The Water Cycle and we are delighted to be raising money for such a fantastic charity.

Johno Lee Visit

Before we break up for Christmas, the children will be having a very exciting visitor coming to the school. This will be our local counsellor Johno Lee. He will be coming into the school to discuss the importance of democracy with the children and why it will be important to vote when they are old enough. This visit will link in with our work with Ancient Greece and we are delighted that Johno will be coming in.

Ukuleles

After Christmas, Year 4 will be working with a specialist music teacher from the Nottingham Music Service. During these sessions children will enjoy rhythm and sound work as well as singing and playing an instrument.

High Adventure Residential

In Spring term, the children will be going to High Adventure Outdoor Education Centre where they will take part in various fun-filled activities over a three day period. This is a great residential and it will be a trip to remember. Please find a link to the website below: https://www.highadventure.co.uk/

Roman Day

During Summer term, the children will get the opportunity to dress up as Romans and will take part in a day that involves various Roman activities such as Latin writing, Roman marching, games and the chance to look at some real Roman artifacts.

If you have any enquiries or queries please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 4 team.
